Editorial Director, Live Events (Remote)

Remote
Work Type: Contract

Invisible Hand is looking for an Editorial Programming Director to join our rapidly growing agency. Our team’s mission is to use culture, the network effect, and live experiences to meet our client’s goals. Our client roster includes Spotify, PBS, Emerson Collective, Omidyar Network, Equality Federation, and many more.

This is a role for a doer who can lead teams for convenings of varying scales: from Jeffersonian dinners to multi-day conferences.  You will own every aspect of what happens on stage: the topics, the content, who speaks.

You are a self-starter, motivated by learning, able to work quickly, and a creative problem solver with incredibly strong communication skills and a “passion for polish.” Candidates should be comfortable working in a startup environment. This is a high-touch client-facing role that requires maturity and discretion; candidates should enjoy cultivating client relationships and leading client calls.

Responsibilities include:

  • Team Cultivation & Leadership

    • Identify and recommend the right roles and rates for teams to get the events done

    • Recruit and onboard the highest caliber talent for each role, including but not limited to bookers, associate producers, writers, etc.

    • Act as THE lead on behalf of the agency

  • Editorial Programming

    • Develop editorial frame, including topics of conversation, concepts for segment structures (i.e. fireside vs panel), creative interstitials to break up programming

    • Work with internal and external stakeholders on key messaging points to include in programming and develop detailed and nuanced approaches to the editorial

    • Oversee scriptwriting as needed

  • Talent Booking

    • Recommend individuals and groups for speaking during the convenings

    • Participate heavily in outreach and booking of talent, at times sourcing and managing external bookers as needed

    • Author talent briefings according to editorial vision, including Q&A, scripting, etc.

Here's what we're looking for:

  • You have at least seven years’ relevant experience. This could be in journalism, events, editorial, or other fields. We would be excited about candidates from a number of backgrounds, so long as they know how to do the work!

  • You have experience pitching convenings and events, and you can probably even contribute to bringing in deal flow for the agency

  • You are a strategic thinker and leader who can act as a trusted partner and advisor to clients across a broad range of outputs

  • You exhibit professionalism and integrity, leading by example, treating people with respect, and seeking and giving constructive feedback.

  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills. You are a great listener; communicate concisely and evocatively in written text; and can present to a boardroom, a small NGO, and anyone else we aim to serve.

  • You are able to manage competing demands and the moving pieces of multiple complex projects, yet remain unflappable under deadline pressure.

Invisible Hand is proud to have a diverse, inclusive team. At IH, we don’t just celebrate our differences, we thrive on them. Our goal is to continue to create a workplace that fosters and champions diversity of thought, lived experience, and perspective, and we encourage people of all backgrounds to apply to join our team.
